Feb. 19, 2020 — As of Wednesday evening, an investigation is continuing into a shooting incident near Florence that claimed the life of one woman and sent a man to the hospital in critical condition with a gunshot to the head.
Around 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 18, Lane County Sheriff’s Office, along with Oregon State Police and first responders from Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue and Western Lane Ambulance District, responded to a residence at 90826 Southview Lane, approximately four miles north of Florence along Highway 101.
OSP and LCSO were first on scene, with emergency medical services and members of SVFR staged away from the home until police could secure the scene for patient care.
Upon entering, police located an elderly couple, both of whom were in their bed and had sustained gunshot wounds.
The woman, Lana Terry, 71, was pronounced deceased at the scene while her husband, Alan Terry, 75, was transported to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart-Riverbend and its trauma unit due to the seriousness of his wound, which was to the back of the head. The Sheriff’s Office investigation indicated the woman shot her husband then shot herself for unknown reasons.
Wednesday morning (Feb. 19), the Lane County Medical Examiner’s Office formally ruled the death of the female as a suicide. The man is continuing to receive medical care for his injuries.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, there was no indication of a continued threat to the community in connection with the shooting.
