With the uncertainty imposed by COVID-19, both sides agree to a two-year contract

Dec. 19, 2020 — At the Western Lane Ambulance District (WLAD) Board of Directors meeting held virtually via Zoom on Thursday, Dec. 17, directors voted 3-1 to approve a new two-year collective bargaining agreement with International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 851, which represents WLAD employees. Directors John Murphey, Mike Webb and Rick Yecny voted in favor of the contract, with Director Larry Farnsworth voting against; Director Cindy Russell was absent from the meeting.

The agreement is retroactive to July 1, 2020.

The previous agreement was for three years but with the uncertainty imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, both sides agreed to a two-year contract this time.

“I am very happy that we could reach an agreement with our employees. We had some tough discussions over the past year concerning the current financial difficulties the district is facing and I am very appreciative of the efforts by employees and directors in reaching a suitable agreement,” said Michael Schick, Fire and EMS Chief.

Both sides agreed to maintain benefits at current levels, with wages to be frozen at 2020 levels for the next two years and to establish a committee of employees and directors to discuss financial issues facing the district, such as PERS.
