William (Bill) Franklin Purves
William (Bill) Purves passed away on February 7, 2022, in Florence. He was born February 13, 1939, in Glendale, CA, to parents Hurbert Purves and Thelma Crow. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1957 and served two tours of duty, working in the forward engine room, until 1963.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Gloria. He is survived by his wife, Gale, and his children, grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
Bill and Gale recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary—they married at the First Presbyterian Church in Azusa, CA, on January 2, 1972. They lived and raised their family in the Southern California area until 1988, when they moved to Florence, OR.
Bill was a member of the Florence Elks Lodge, and he and Gale enjoyed being in the Rhody Roamers RV club. He was approachable and social, and he made friends everywhere he went. He was protective and gentle with his family, who have fond memories of camping, grilling, and having large gatherings with lots of food. Recognizable by his booming voice, he loved cheering on his favorite football teams and NASCAR drivers.
Bill’s family would like to sincerely thank the Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue EMTs for their professionalism and services, as well as the staff of PeaceHealth Medical Center for their care. The family is not planning to hold a public service, but they are grateful for their friends’ and community’s support.
