What’s happening in the Siuslaw region as of March 21, 2020

March 21, 2020 — On March 16, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced an executive order that requires social distancing. Statewide, all gatherings of more than 25 people have been cancelled, with Brown requesting that people limit their meetings to less than 10.

The following businesses, organizations and groups are experiencing changes while the state prepares for the novel coronavirus COVID-19. This list was compiled by Coast Radio and Siuslaw News.


Important Services:

  • PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Hospital – visitors will not be allowed within the medical center until further notice, with a few exemptions. People experiencing fever or respiratory infection symptoms (e.g. cough), must call their provider’s office prior to scheduling an appointment.
  • Lane County – Visit www.lanecountyor.gov/coronavirus for more info. The Non-Emergency Call Center, which can be reached at 541-682-1380, will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • City of Florence – Florence City Hall is closed to the public and has cancelled all public meetings. People should view ci.florence.or.us/em/covid-19-informational
    -resources for complete information.
  • Dunes City Hall – front window closed, but people can still contact dunescityhall.com.
  • Florence Police Department – the Florence Justice Center is closed to the public. Call the non-emergency line at 541-997-3515 to make arrangements.
  • Siuslaw Public Library – closed until further notice in both Florence and Mapleton. Visit www.siuslawlibrary.info to check out e-books and audio books.
  • Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue and Western Lane Ambulance District – have closed public access to their offices. Contact them at svfr.org or www.westernlaneambulance.com.


Area Schools:

  • Siuslaw School District – cancelled all classes and sporting events until at least April 28. The district will utilize bus routes for schoolwork and food delivery. Visit www.siuslaw.k12.or.us for further information.
  • Mapleton School District – cancelled all classes and sporting events until at least April 28. The district will be providing nutrition services. More info is at www.mapleton.k12.or.us.

  • Florence Dental Clinic – Dr. Justin Linton & Dr. Brian Holmes are following the American Dental Association’s recommendations that dentists nationwide postpone electric procedures for the next three weeks. Concentrating on emergency dental care will allow us to care for our patients and alleviate the burden that dental emergencies would place on hospital emergency departments.

  • Florence Food Share – open with 80 new clients this week. Offering curbside service for those with health issues, but you need to call ahead. In addition, seeking food and money donations.
  • Florence Habitat for Humanity – Open by appointment only
  • Florence Habitat Restore – remaining open at this time
  • Frames of Florence – regular office hours. Bring a can of food to donate to Food Share and receive 10% off your project total
  • Fred Meyer – shopping and side door pick up
