Sina Doris West

WEST—Sina Doris West born Dec. 8, 1926, in Tacoma, Wash., to Carl and Marian Smith, passed away March 26, 2017.

Doris spent most of her growing up years in Monroe, Wash.Doris and Gene met in Monroe after he returned from working in the ship yards after the war. They were married Aug. 23, 1946. In 1952, Gene and Doris and their family moved to the Wallow’s for a logging job.

They moved to the Mapleton area in 1953.

Doris loved faith, family, hunting and fishing, family stories around the campfires and driving school bus.

Doris spent 26 years driving school bus in Mapleton. She spent many years as the trip driver and was very eager to point out wildlife on those many trips. From whales in the ocean to deer and elk in a field, kids would scramble to the windows for a quick view.

She was often the only Mapleton fan at the sporting events and made her voice heard in support. She also drove the bean bus for the Crowson family in Monroe, Ore., hauling kids to the fields to pick beans in the summers.

Doris was an avid fisherman in the lakes, Siuslaw River and in the ocean. She was one of the few women that crossed the Siuslaw bar alone or with many friends she took fishing.

She always caught fish. Smoked kokanee is very good and there were very generous to share the bounty.

Doris also loved to hunt deer.   She was very good at spotting them and if they didn’t get anything that day, the snacks were plentiful in the front seat. If they would have gotten stranded, they could of survived a few days on what she had in her purse.

Family meant a lot to Doris and she always kept that a priority.

Doris is survived by her husband, Gene; their three children: Linda Johnson of Medford, Ore., Jimmy and Peggy West of Springfield, Ore., and Carl and Kathy West of Mapleton, Ore.; seven grandkids: Chris Johnson and Sara, Doug Johnson and Christina, Andrea Ciganik and Jerry, Courtney Cook and David, Carrie McNeill and Aaron, and Amy West; and 11 great-grandkids: Brad, Tanner, Anna, James, Hannah, Jayda, Zac, Mia, Addison, Macy and Claire.

She was preceded in death by her sisters: Jean Menzel and Sally Budden; and grandson Alex West.

Doris was a special mom to her family and a great friend to many people. She will be missed very much. She will always be a part of our hearts and memories.

A memorial service will be held April 8, at 1 p.m., at Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home. Private cremational rites were held.
