Watercolor Society takes a bold look at color

Workshops, classes and field trips will highlight 2018 Spring Convention at FEC

April 7, 2018 — ‘It’s a watercolor-full weekend in Florence as the Watercolor Society of Oregon (WSO) holds its 2018 Spring Convention and Experimental Exhibition at the Florence Events Center on April 7 and 8.

The group is holding a series of workshops and lectures over the weekend that will offer instruction, critiques and techniques to all skill levels of watercolor artists. WSO plans to take advantage of the creative energies inspired by the stunning coastal locations selected for the weekend.

Organizers chose to hold the event in Florence with an eye to incorporating this area’s unique small-town beauty with the dynamism and energy of the coast.

Saturday’s schedule includes two separate opportunities for artists to experience nature by joining in a “Paint Out.”

Participants will be working on sketching and painting and will discuss ways to capture the beauty of the coast and Historic Old Town Florence at outdoor locations, under the guidance of Vinita Pappas and Steve Kleier.

Those interested in these outdoors sessions will meet at the FEC and should prepare for adverse weather conditions.

For those preferring a more controlled environment for their morning workshop, Mojdeh Bahar will be presenting on the subject of the interconnectedness of Nature and Persian Art.

From 9 to 10:30 a.m., Ruth Armitage will be instructing attendees on the challenges associated with incorporating the color white into watercolor. At the same time, Alexandra Eyer and Pat Renner will be showing a video for their class, “Two Nudes with a Tattoo.”

Bold colors will be the subject of Sally Bills Bailey’s workshop at 10:40 a.m. and Fran Larsen will critique 20 members paintings at 10:45.

Afternoon sessions include advice on traveling with paintings given by Pat Farr. Geoffrey McCormack will provide tips for shipping work.

One of Friday’s highlights was the round table discussion between WSO winning artists from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Saturday afternoon program will finish up with a workshop given by popular Zentangle instuctor Rosie Hill.

An Artist’s Reception and a Dinner Banquet and Awards ceremony will conclude the evening.

Sunday’s schedule is limited with the WSO business meeting at 8:30 a.m. The closing event will be a lecture and demonstration given by keynote speaker Fran Larson from 11 a.m to 1 p.m.
