STEWART—Warren Stewart passed away on July 5, 2022, at the age of 95.
Warren was born Dec. 27, 1926, to Orville and Virgie Stewart in Milton-Freewater, Ore.
He graduated from Walla Walla University with music and education majors in 1950, having taught voice lessons at the college his last two years. After graduating, he taught seventh grade and band at Freewater School; standard four in Durban, S. Africa; music in junior high and high school in New York City; and music and math in junior high in San Diego.
He returned to Milton-Freewater in 1960, teaching sixth grade and felling trees in summer. While there, he met and married Nancy Gibson in 1969. They moved to Charleston, W.Va., where Warren sold books and then taught and served as principal of Emerald Junior Academy. Their two daughters, Deborah and Carol, were born there.
In 1972, they moved to Sedona, Ariz., where Warren built houses. When a recession hit in 1973, he thinned trees for the forest service until asked to teach school in Nevada, Mo.
The family moved to Elmira, Ore., in 1977, where Warren was principal and a teacher of Countryside Seventh-day Adventist School. In 1981, he became administrator of Alveta Home in Rose Lodge for developmentally disabled.
Upon retirement, he and Nancy moved back to Elmira to care for his mother in their home. When she died, the pair went to South Korea to teach English and Bible, took a break, and then taught another year.
In 1999, they moved to Manton, Calif., where Warren cared for his orchard and teaching again in Korea in 2003 and 2004.
The pair enjoyed hiking, mountain-climbing, birding, water-skiing, gardening and sharing God's word.
Warren and Nancy moved to Florence in 2020, where he died in their home July 5, leaving to mourn his wife Nancy, two daughters — Deborah Judson of Yuba City, Calif., and Carol Schaffer of Sandy, Ore. — and seven grandchildren. Warren's brother Lowell and sister Tola Hasse preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Florence Seventh-day Adventist Church, 4445 Highway 101.
