Virginia B. Hanson (Virgie) passed away February 23, 2022.

HANSON—Virginia B. Hanson (Virgie) passed away February 23, 2022, at St. Charles hospital in Bend, Ore., surrounded by her family and friends.

Virgie was born Feb. 26, 1927, to Norman and Velma Hanson and was raised in Glenada, a community south of Florence, Ore.

Her grandparents Hans and Anna Hanson homesteaded in the Glenada area in the 1800s and owned a logging company with their sons Clifford, Merle, Harvey and Norman Everett, also known as Big Jim. Virgie’s grandad Hans Hanson, in his early years, helped build the Heceta Head Lighthouse, too.

Virgie was a taxi driver in Florence for several years, also had a brush business, picked cones and mushrooms, worked in several mills in the area and finally retired working at the plywood plant in Mapleton.

She worked very hard all her life.

She is survived by her sister, Nadine Sprouse and Husband Kennith, nephews Norman Baker Sr. and wife Sherri and Lawrence Sprouse and friend Paul Jones. She was a great-aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Proceeding her in death were her mother and father, Norman and Velma Hanson; brother Norman Hanson Jr.; grandparents Omar and Maggie Armstrong and Hans and Anna Hanson; along with many other family members.

Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date and time in the spring.
