March 23, 2019 — Siuslaw kicking off the 2019 track season by breaking the ice at its annual Icebreaker Invitational last Thursday, hosting five teams from multiple classifications, including 1A Mapleton, 2A Coquille, 3A Douglas and 4A rival North Bend.
The meet posted several standout performances by the Vikings, particularly on the girls’ side. Sophomores Gracie Freudenthal, Brea Blankenship and Andrea Osbon each won events, including two each for Osbon and Freudenthal.
In addition, Blankenship’s winning time of 2 minutes, 28.80 seconds in the 800 meters clocked the fastest time so far this season in the 4A.
Meanwhile, Freudenthal. who won both hurdles races, ran the fastest 4A time so far this season in the 300-meter hurdles with her time of 48.42.
Osbon took first place in the shot put at 35-4, then set a personal best in the discus with a winning mark of 106 feet, 2.25 inches.
The Lady Viks also got wins from junior Hannah Rannow in the 1,500 meters (5:03.13), freshman Rylee Colton in the 3,000-meter race with a PR at 11:59.44, and the 4x400-meter relay team of Naomi Shoji, Rannow, Freudenthal and Blankenship in 4:21.72.
The Viking boys dominated the distance races, beginning with junior Kiger Johnson’s first-place time of 2:12.94 in the 800 meters. Fellow junior Brendon Jensen won the 1,500 meters in 4:28.98; freshman Chad Hughes won the 3,000 meters in 10:40.44; and the relay team of Aedan Lawrence, Ryan Jennings, Johnson and Jensen won the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:45.49.
The Vikings will compete again April 2 at the Sky-Em League JV meet at Junction City, beginning at 3 p.m., then the Marist Track Classic at Marist High School on April 6.
