Jan. 16, 2019 — Siuslaw opened the Sky-Em League basketball season at home last Friday, hosting Cottage Grove (1-0, 3-12) for what turned out to be a battle-from behind effort by the Vikings that came close to caging the Lions.
Siuslaw was the first to score, on a dish from sophomore Jacob Foskett to senior Dylan Wynn. The Lions quickly tied things up at the other end on a drive along the baseline, sparking a 13-0 run that included three 3-pointers that prompted a timeout by Siuslaw coach Dylan Perry.
Coming back from the break, senior Nick Swift scored on a jumper for the Viks’ first basket in nearly 4 minutes of play.
Once again, the Lions went on a scoring run, moving ahead 19-4 before Wynn sank a short jump shot with 1:17 remaining in the quarter.
Siuslaw was able to keep Cottage Grove off the glass for the rest of the period, adding two points on a rebound from freshman Braydon Thornton.
Trailing by 11 to start the second quarter, Siuslaw rallied, posting its biggest period of the game thanks to a flurry of 3-pointers from Wynn, Thornton and sophomore Liam McClellan.
After trailing by as many as 17 points in the quarter, the Vikings pulled themselves within 10, 34-24, heading into the half.
After a scoreless three minutes to open the third period, the Lions scored first, followed by a long 3-pointer from Wynn to cut Siuslaw’s deficit to 9.
A steal from Foskett and pass to sophomore Skyler Loomis on a fastbreak put the Viks within 7 points with 6:14 in the quarter — causing the Lions to call their own timeout.
Scoring then went into the dead zone for a full 5 minutes as both teams upped the defensive pressure with full-court pressure.
The Lions sank a free throw with 1:34 remaining, with Thornton negating it on a pair of charity shots from the foul line to keep Siuslaw within 7 points.
With 54 seconds left, Cottage Grove sank a 3-pointer and held Siuslaw off to preserve a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, 41-31.
The Lions quickly extended their lead, scoring 9 points in the first 4 minutes while Siuslaw went scoreless.
McClellan provided the Viks with their first basket of the period halfway through the quarter, draining a long 3-pointer from the far corner of the baseline. Wynn scored a rebound, and Foskett dished to Wynn on the return, to put Siuslaw within 12 points with 3:11 on the clock.
But again, Cottage Grove pulled away, moving ahead 57-38 and holding out for the win, 59-42.
Wynn led Siuslaw in scoring with 15 points, McClellan had 11 points; each scored three 3-pointers in the game.
Last night, Siuslaw kicked off a three-game road series at Marist (after press deadlines) and will travel to Marshfield Friday before heading to Elmira next Tuesday.
This Friday’s game against the Pirates tips off at 7:15 p.m., following the girls’ game at 5:45 p.m.
