Viks nab third-straight win

Siuslaw: 02  22  20  14 — 58

Reedsport: 11  09  08  17 — 45

Dec. 29, 2018 — Following their 54-33 win over the Tigers at the Bandon Dunes Holiday Invitational, the Viking boys basketball team kept its winning momentum going on Glenn Butler Court Thursday night against Reedsport.

While freshman Brandon Thornton and sophomore Jacob Foskett powered Siuslaw’s offense against the Tigers a week earlier at Bandon with 26 points and 24 points, respectively, it was senior Dylan Wynn who set the offensive tempo Thursday against the Braves.

However, Siuslaw got off to a slow start against an upperclassmen-dominated Reedsport roster, falling behind 11-2 by the end of the opening period — with a pair of freethrows from Foskett providing the only scoring for the Vikings.

But that all changed less than 10 seconds into the second quarter as Siuslaw went on a 7-0 run with scoring from Foskett and 5 points from Wynn — including the first of four 3-pointers in the game.

The run prompted a Reedsport timeout, but Siuslaw kept the pace going as Foskett drained two more freethrows and Thornton scored on a steal and fastbreak lay-up to take Siuslaw’s first lead of the game.

Siuslaw never really looked back.

With scoring from junior Caleb Hennessee and freshman Brody Terry, the Viks held a narrow lead, 21-20, then extended it to 24-20 on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Wynn to end the half.

The third period was all Siuslaw as Wynn, Foskett and Thornton combined for 14 of Siuslaw’s 20 points in the period, along with a pair of 3-pointers from sophomore Liam McClellan.

Meanwhile, Siuslaw full-court pressure held the Braves to their lowest scoring period of the game, allowing Reedsport just 8 points.

Up 44-28 to start the final quarter, Siuslaw cruised to a 58-45 win despite being outscored 17-14 in the period.

Wynn led scoring with 24 points. Foskett had 10, followed by Thornton and McClellan with 6 points each, Terry and Hennessee with 4 points each, and 2 points for sophomore Skyler Loomis.

The Vikings will get a break before returning to the hardwood for the Sky-Em/Skyline Crossover at Cottage Grove High School Jan. 4 and 5.

Game times and opponents have yet to be announced.

Siuslaw will begin its league season Friday, Jan. 11, when it hosts Cottage Grove, beginning at 5:45 p.m.
