Viks land top marks at Sky-Em meet

Siuslaw junior Ryan Rendon-Padilla landed a throw of 172 feet, 4 inches Tuesday for first place and the best 4A javelin mark in the state so far this season.

April 6, 2019 — After missing the Siuslaw Icebreaker a few weeks ago as a precautionary measure following a minor injury, Viking junior Ryan Padilla was back on the javelin runway last Tuesday in Junction City, where he made his presence known by landing the new 4A state-best throw of 172 feet, 4 inches.

The mark won the event at the Sky-Em League JV Meet, setting the tone as the defending state champion and besting the day’s second-best throw by 41 feet. It also overtook what had been the season’s previous best mark in the 4A, set by Tanner Stottlemyer of Newport in mid-March, of 162-2.

Rendon-Padilla went on to place second in the discus as well, clearing 109-9.

The Vikings had a number of outstanding performances pn Tuesday on the way to claiming five first-place medals and a total of 19 top-four finishes in Junction City.

For the girls, Seniors Davina Galli and Madison Reynolds each had first-place finishes, with Galli winning the 100-meter hurdles in a PR time of 18.47, and Reynolds taking the discus at 83-4.

In addition, sophomores Gracie Freudenthal and Andrea Osbon also brought home gold; Freudenthal won the 200-meter race in 27.99 and Osbon won the shot put at 31-4.

Other top finishes included: Senior Hailee Edgerly with second place in the discus (82-2); freshman Winnie Zhen with second in the pole vault (5-0); junior Isaiah Jones placed second in the 200 meters (25.44); sophomore Ryan Jennings was second in the 800 meters with a PR time of 2:10.9 for the eighth-fastest time in the 4A so far this season.

Today, Siuslaw is competing at Marist High school. Tuesday, Siuslaw will host as Sky-Em JV Meet, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
