Oct. 5, 2019 — It was another 50/50 week for Siuslaw volleyball as the Vikings dominated visiting Elmira, but fell to Junction City on the road.

The crowds showed up in force Tuesday night as the Viks started their first set with a commanding performance, handily winning the set 25-12 to sounds of “boom” from the crowd whenever senior Mia Collins made a kill — 16 overall for the night.

But the energy waned in the second set, as the Falcon’s focused on tipping the ball rather than swinging. Still, Siuslaw was able to hold on for a 25-19 win.

By set three, the Viks had figured out its defense, beginning with a serve streak that knocked the wind out of the Falcons, who were unable to recover. Siuslaw easily took the third set 25-11, securing the match win.

Standouts from the game included Elissa Hurley with 6 kills and Kya Blake, who served up five aces against Elmira

Siuslaw’s fortune changed while on the road later in the week at Junction City on Thursday night. The Tigers, who came into the match on a five-game winning streak, continued that momentum with a three-set sweep of the Viks while preventing Siuslaw from breaking the 20-point barrier in each set.

The loss put the Vikings at 7-6 overall so far this season, and at 2-3 midway through the Sky-Em League season.

The Viks will have a second shot at the Tigers today, Oct. 5, during the Junction City Invitational, which also includes Elmira, Madras and Sweet Home.

Tuesday, Siuslaw hosts Elmira, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
