May 30, 2019 — It took five Neah-Kah-Nie pitchers, but the Pirates were able to narrowly edge the Vikings for a 5-4 win Tuesday in a non-league baseball match-up at Siuslaw High School.

In contrast, sophomore Dalton Stinger was the only pitcher on the mound for the Vikings, striking out 5 Pirates on 104 pitches, including 66 strikes. He walked 2 and allowed 7 hits and five runs, with only 2 of those earned.

Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn said he was pleased with the pitching by Stinger, who has essentially pitched in relief in the past. “I was proud of how Dalton pitched in the game,” Shinn said. “It was nice to see him respond well when given the opportunity to start.”

The Viks had a chance to secure the win in the bottom of the seventh, with the tying run on base and the winning run in position to score, but Pirates pitcher Joshua Longfellow caimed the save by leaving both Viking runners stranded on base to end the game.

Sophomore Elijah Blankenship had a double and 1 run scored, junor Jared Northrop scored twice and sophomore Chayton James went 1-for-3 with 1 run scored.

Siuslaw’s final non-league game is this Tuesday, when the Vikings host Douglas High School in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.

League play begins April 9 at Marist High School.
