Vikings, Sailors to open basketball seasons together

Nov. 3, 2018 — For the first time, basketball teams from Siuslaw and Mapleton will not only open the season at the same time, but also at the same place.

All four teams from the boys and girls programs will tip off at Mapleton High School on Wednesday, Nov. 28, in a pair of endowment games, which do not count toward a school’s or an individual student’s season participation limitations, according to the OSAA, which approves all endowment competitions. Tickets will be $6 for adults and $4 for students, with 50 percent of the proceeds going to the OSAA, and the remainder going to the host school.

The Viking boys were 12-12 last season under coach Dylan Perry, and 4-6 in their final season in the Far West League before moving to the new Sky-Em this year.

The Mapleton boys were 4-16 overall and 3-9 in the 1A Mountain West under coach and Mapleton alumni Eric Wolgamott.

The Lady Vikings were 4-20 overall and 1-9 in league play last season, and will play this season under new coach Chad Smith, who also took over as head coach of Siuslaw’s football program this year.

Coincidentally, the Lady Sailors, who were 0-18 overall and 0-12 in the 1A Mountain West League last year, will also be starting this season with a new head coach, Melissa Duffy.

Tip off for both match-ups at Mapleton High School will be at 7 p.m.
