Feb. 6, 2019 — Both Siuslaw basketball teams were on the road at the Lions’ den in Cottage Grove last Friday night, looking for a chance to pick up a much-needed win. Unfortunately for both Siuslaw teams that hope was squelched as the season approaches its finish in less than two weeks.
In the boys’ game, the Vikings gave the Lions a tough time, forcing the game into overtime after remaining within 5 points throughout the matchup. In the final 17 seconds of the fourth quarter, Siuslaw took the lead on a three-point play by junior guard Caleb Hennessee, who drained the free throw to put Siuslaw ahead by 1 point.
The Lions held the final possession of the period, then dished it to senior post Jasper Nichols-Ferguson, who was fouled on a drive to the basket with 2.8 seconds remaining.
Nichols-Ferguson missed his first attempt but made the second, tying the game at forcing it into overtime.
In the extra period, the Lions quickly scored on a pair of lay-ups, eventually outscoring Siuslaw 10-2 in overtime for a 58-50 win.
In the girls' game, the Lady Lions, currently tied for second in the Sky-Em, took a 10-point lead into the second quar-ter.
Siuslaw was able to cut the Lions’ lead to as few as five points in the second period and were poised to make a run, but poor free throw shooting kept the Vikings from generating the offensive spark they needed; Siuslaw went 5-for-20 in the first half and 13-of-38 overall from the foul line.
The Lions came out strong in the second half, moving ahead by 18 points to start the final period and then went on a 22-2 run to win it, 64-31.
Last night, Siuslaw hosted Marist (after press deadlines) and will be on the road Friday to face Marshfield.
Girls play at 5:45 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:15 p.m.
Siuslaw’s final home game will be next Tuesday against Elmira.
