The Siuslaw cross country team continued its run among the elite last weekend, with the Viking boys placing first and the Lady Viks finishing second in their respective divisions at the Paul Mariman Invitational cross country meet in Philomath.
Of the 13 boys teams, Cottage Grove was the closest to Siuslaw’s winning score of 60 points, coming in at 110 points. Fueled by personal records for four out of five team members, Siuslaw was led by sophomore Brendon Jensen’s fifth-place individual finish in a PR time of 17 minutes, 5.23 seconds. Senior Isaac Griffes was close behind with a PR at 17:17.17, with sophomore Jonah Jarman clocking a personal best of 17:23.35, and sophomore Kiger Johnson coming in at 17:44.89 for a season-best mark.
Senior Jordan Northrop rounded out the top five with a PR of 18:03.01.
In the girls division, 10 teams were on the course as Scappoose took the top spot with 37 points. Led by sophomore Hannah Rannow, the Lady Vikings nabbed second place with a score of 59 which, like the boys team, included four personal bests — including Rannow’s time of 19:39.56 for third place overall.
Freshman Brea Blankenship also set a PR with her time of 20:42.02, followed by sophomore Chloe Madden’s PR time of 21:33.90 and fellow sophomore Anne Wartnik in 21:39.73.
Freshman Gracie Freudenthal ran a time of 21:52.14 for a personal best.
This Saturday, Siuslaw will compete at the George Fox Classic at Willamette State Park in Gervais, leaving just three meets left in the season — including the Far West League district meet (Oct. 26) and the 4A state meet (Nov. 4) at Lane Community College in Eugene.
Next Thursday, Siuslaw will host the Run for the Brownies at Sandpines Golf Links.
