May 19, 2023 — The Siuslaw boys golf team put a ribbon on a great league season by bringing home a district championship at Chehalem Glenn Golf Course in Newberg on May 8-9.

Leading the Vikings and bringing home a score of 152 over two days was sophomore Ryan Klampe.

By bringing home the district championship the Vikings qualified for a trip to the OSAA 3A/2A/1A State Championship that was May 15-16 at Tokatee Golf Course in Blue River.

Next for Siuslaw and good enough for 6th place overall was the performance of freshman Will Johnson. He scored 178 for the two days. Just behind Johnson, in 7th place was junior Braxton Hulet with a 185 over 36 holes. Rounding out scoring at district for Siuslaw was freshman Camden Linton with a 192 which earned him a 9th place district finish.

Klampe is happy to see how his and his team’s season is progressing.

“We’ve had a great season,” said Klampe. “We’ve won so many tournaments. I think district makes seven in a row. It's been a great season. It's been fun.”

Though Klampe has been at the top of the Viking leaderboard all season, everyone on the varsity team has contributed. Klampe has been especially impressed by the play of teammate Linton, who also competes for the Siuslaw track team.

“He doesn’t really practice with us that much because he’s at track,” Klampe said of Linton. “He still comes out here and scores in the 90s which is great and helps the team score a lot. He’s a great golfer.”

Linton was a little more humble about his performance this season.

“The season’s been pretty good,” he said. “I started out just okay and I’ve gotten better since.”

Hulet has also shown steady improvement all season and noted that though victories make for an enjoyable season, with this group it's been fun from the beginning.

“This season has been a lot of fun,” said Hulet. “These are fantastic, funny guys who are my very good friends. You know winning helps but with this group it's been fun since the beginning.”

Senior Wyatt Wells has rotated with fellow senior Jacob Welton in the #5 spot on the Viking varsity roster. He noted how it's been a strange, but good thing being a senior on a team with so many good, young golfers.

“It’s kind of weird having these kids being so good,” said Wells. “I don’t really think about it that much though because we are all on the same team in the end.”

Full results for the state tournament were not available at press deadlines but Klampe was leading the field after day one. Check siuslawnews.com and the next edition of the Siuslaw News for full coverage of Siuslaw’s performance at state.
