Jan. 23, 2019 — With both Marshfield teams ranked among the top 3 in the state at the 4A division by the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) — include No. 1 for the Lady Pirates — Siuslaw knew it would have its hands full in both instances.

And it was right.

The girls were the first to tip off at Marshfield, where the top-ranked Lady Pirates wasted no time in getting the upper hand, securing a 53-point lead by halftime (63-10). Though the Lady Viks were able to nearly double their first-half scoring in the third and fourth quarters with 19 points, Marshfield easily held on for the win, 79-29.

Sophomore Gracie Freudenthal led the Lady Viks in scoring with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Fellow sophomores Lindsey Long, Brea Blankenship and Lizbeth Garcia-Galvan added a combined 14 points, along with 3 points from senior Madison Reynolds and 2 points from junior post Mia Collins.

In the boys game, the third-ranked Pirates (3-0 in league) took a 22-8 lead by the end of the third period, extending that lead to 39-15 by halftime. They eventually held the Viks to single-digit scoring in all four quarters on the way to a 68-31 win to preserve their top seat in the Sky-Em League.

Sophomores Jacob Foskett and Liam McClellan led the Viks in scoring with 9 and 7 points, respectively.

Senior guard Jordan Taniguchi had the final basket of the game, scoring on a fastbreak lay-up at the buzzer.

Last night, Siuslaw (0-3, 5-12) played at Elmira (after press deadlines) and will return to host Junction City this Friday as the first half of league play ends.

Tip-off is set for 5:45 p.m., followed by the girls at 7:15 p.m.
