Feb. 20, 2019 — This Friday, Siuslaw wrestlers Elijah LaCosse and Ryan Jennings, both sophomores, along with junior Matthew Horrillo and senior Riley Jennings, will be on the mats in Portland at the Oregon School Activities Association Class 4A state wrestling tournament at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Each of the Viks four state-qualifying grapplers finished among the top four during the recent Special District 2 tournament, with LaCosse (126 lbs.) and Horrillo (220 lbs.) nabbing third, and brothers Ryan (152 lbs.) and Riley (170 lbs.) placing fourth in their respective weight divisions.
Riley drew the toughest opening round match-up set for this Friday, when he takes on No. 2 seed Grayson Livingston, a senior from La Grande with a record of 42-5. Meanwhile, Ryan will open the tournament against Estacada junior Sam Garrison (27-9), currently the No. 4 seed at 152 lbs.
Battling on two of the other 12 mats reserved for Friday’s first round of 5A-1A bouts will be LaCosse and Horrillo, each of whom will face the No. 5 seed in their weight classes.
Matches for the OSAA Class 4A championships get underway at 4 p.m. on Friday and will continue on Saturday.
Siuslaw match-ups on Friday include:
• 126 pounds: Elijah LaCosse (30-13), unseeded, vs. No. 5 seed Freddy Hernandez of Woodburn (41-12)
• 152 pounds: Ryan Jennings (19-16), unseeded, vs. No. 4 seed Sam Garrison of Estacada (27-9)
• 170 pounds: Riley Jennings (33-13), unseeded, vs. No. 2 seed Grayson Livingston of La Grande (42-5)
• 220 pounds: Matthew Horrillo (28-12), unseeded, vs. No. 5 seed Kody Zemke of Madras
The winners of Friday’s opening rounds will advance into Saturday’s championships and consolation rounds.
