Marist d Siuslaw boys: 64-37
Marist d Siuslaw girls: 44-36
Feb. 12, 2020 — It was a hard night at Marist Friday as both the boys and girls basketball teams lost their matches against the top-ranked Spartans.
On the boys side, Marist took an early lead, leading the Viks 17-10 the in first quarter, ultimately creating a deficit that Siuslaw couldn’t overcome. By halftime, Siuslaw trailed 18 (38-20), with the Spartans building on their lead for a 52-30 advantage entering the fourth quarter — and a 64-37 win.
Brody Terry led the Viks with 14 points against Marist.
At press time on Tuesday, the boys team still has a chance to make the state playoffs, with everything hinging on last night’s battle on the road at Marshfield (after press deadlines). Should they come away with a win over the Pirates, they would still also have to defeat Elmira this Friday at the Falcon’s nest— then win their final home game next Tuesday against Junction City.
The girls fared better in their Marist matchup, leading several times in the first quarter and trailing by only 4 points at halftime.
The Lady Viks came out strong in the second half and scored the first basket of the third quarter to pull within a single basket of the Lady Spartans. But Marist fought back, going on a scoring run that left Siuslaw trailing 38-27 heading into the fourth quarter. The Spartans were able to maintain the lead for a 44-36 win.
Mia Collins had a game-high 14 points, along with 6 rebounds. Lindsey Long had 8 points for Siuslaw, and Gracie Freudenthal nabbed 15 rebounds.
At 0-7, though they have a smaller overall win record compared to last season, Siuslaw’s loss deficits have been much tighter this year. In 2019, the Viks lost to Marist by 25 points, compared to 8 points in the last game. Against Cottage Grove, Siuslaw lost by 33 points last season; this season the Lady Viks shaved 12 points from their loss ration this year against the Lady Lions.
However, the biggest improvement was against Marshfield, with the Lady Pirates plundering Siuslaw by 48 points last season (29-77.) This year, the Viks lost by just five points, 29-34.
Last night, Siuslaw was on the road at Marshfield (after press deadlines) and will travel to Elmira on Friday before finishing the season at home against Junction City during Senior Night on Feb. 18.
Friday’s games against the Falcons tips off with the girls at 5:45 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:15 p.m.
