COX—Vadis Marie (Miller) Cox, of Florence, Ore., died on November 27, 2022. A burial service is scheduled for Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. at Pacific Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Family and friends will gather following the service at First Baptist Church of Florence. She was 88 years old.
Mrs. Cox was the youngest of 11 children born to John James and Velma (Wallace) Miller. She was born in Oregon City but spent her childhood in the area that is now Siuslaw National Forest Service and Portland Audubon’s Ten Mile Creek Sanctuary, in the Coastal Mountains near Yachats, Mapleton and Waldport.
She was an equestrienne from birth. She rode all over the coastal hills near her home and as an adult rode the landscapes of New Mexico and Grant County, Ore., as well.
She married twice, to Vern Wolgamott then to Walter Cox. Though divorced, she remained on good terms with both until their deaths.
Mrs. Cox worked all her life to support her family, and in her 40s she returned to school and achieved her Licensed Practical Nurse certificate. She worked as a gifted nurse in many environments and retired well into her 70s.
After spending many years in Grant then Umatilla counties, where her grown children had settled at the time, she recently moved to Florence to stay with her daughter. Her final months in Florence were spent surrounded by family. She spent Thanksgiving just days before her death with her family at her grandson Alex’s home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandchild and all of her siblings. She is survived by Lynn (John) Hampton of Florence; son Dan Wolgamott of Veneta; daughter Allison Cox of Florence; and Walter Cox of White Salmon, Washington. Mrs. Cox, affectionately called “Gronny” by her descendants, is also survived by 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren (at last count).
Arrangements are being managed by Burns Riverside Chapel, Florence.
