Tuesday night storm causes power outages, road closures

Highway 126 remains closed at mile post 25.5 due to a mud slide

STORM UPDATE: Last night's heavy winds and rain caused multiple power outages throughout the Siuslaw Valley, as well as a mudslide along highway 126 at mile post 25.5, near the Wildcat bridge. The road remains closed as of 6:30 this morning, with travelers being detoured to Highway 36.

In addition, there were several downed trees overnight and debris is likely still on and around roadways throughout the area, particularly along rural roads and highways. Travelers are urged to proceed with extreme caution.

The Mapleton School District announced that all school activities are canceled for today due to a power outage at the school as well as outages in the area and some local flooding. The Siuslaw School District will continue as normal, including meal delivery, although some staff may be delayed coming from Eugene due to the Highway 36 detour.

Those who plan to travel to or from Eugene should plan ahead due to the detour as well as the potential for more flooding at Cushman along Highway 126. High tide is at 11:30 this morning, so if you must travel, passage through the area should be made at least an hour prior to (or after) that time. Siuslaw News will provide additional updates as they become available.
