Taking it to the streets for seniors

Kiwanis recognizes Mapleton and Siuslaw graduates with street signs

June 3, 2020 — The Class of 2020 can now drive past 110 signs bearing their names and those of their classmates.

Kiwanis Club of Florence provided these street signs for the seniors at Mapleton and Siuslaw high schools.

“We’re recognizing everyone who started the school year with the intention of graduating,” said Kiwanis President Bob Sneddon.

Each student has a sign, along with seven additional blank signs honoring the whole class.

In Florence, signs went up on May 31 to line Highway 101 between Eighth Street and the Siuslaw River Bridge.

The Mapleton signs were delivered to the school district for installation this week.

The suggestion for the signs came from Siuslaw Key Club advisor Jan McKnight.

“We had to do something for these kids,” she said, noting that so many activities normally associated with being a graduating senior have been taken away because of COVID-19 precautions.

“Putting the signs up for the entire week gives the community a chance to recognize all of the seniors,” Sneddon said.

Starting on Friday, graduation day for both schools, students will be able to pick up their signs. Kiwanis will coordinate delivering any remaining signs after that.
