Dec. 12, 2018 — Toys for Tots will be distributing free toys to eligible families this Tuesday, Dec. 18, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue (SVFR) Main Station on Highway 101.
SVFR Recruiting and Retention Coordinator Pete “Boa” Warren is helping with the toy distribution and said he is pleased the district is able to provide the location and personnel to help with the event.
“Toys for Tots is coming back for the second year. Last year’s inaugural Florence event was well attended, with over 300 families coming in to receive toys — and we expect more this year,” Warren said.
There are some minor hurdles that families wishing to receive toys need to be aware of before arriving for their children’s gifts. Children receiving toys must be 14 years old or younger and must be accompanied by a legal guardian or parent.
In addition, paperwork must be provided to show a legal relationship between the adults present and the youngsters wishing to receive toys. These required documents are necessary to assure that children receiving toys are doing so with their parents or legal guardians’ approval, according to Warren.
Acceptable documents for parents are a local photo ID or photo ID with local mail address, proving residency in Lane County, and for children a birth certificate or Social Security Card and one of the following: the first sheet of a medical card showing both the parent’s and child’s names; or DHS paperwork that includes both the parents and child’s name; or any other legal document that includes both the parents and child’s name and date of birth.
More information is available at www.toysfortots.org and SVFR’s Facebook page.
“We thank those who’ve already signed up to help with this big event,” Warren said. “They are: the U.S. Marines, U.S. Coast Guard Florence and Winchester Bay, Florence Police Department, Soroptimist International of Florence, Swisshome Deadwood Fire District, Mapleton Fire Department and your SVFR Members. We welcome those who’d like to assist us, as we want to make this a ‘community owned’ event.”
Toys for Tots is a program that was originated by and is overseen nationally by the United States Marine Corps Reserve.
The first Toy for Tots distribution took place in 1947 in Los Angeles and has since expanded across the country. The organization has distributed approximately 550 million toys since its first distribution event and requests for donations increase each year, according to the group’s website.
The primary goal of Marine Toys for Tots is, through the gift of a new toy, to help bring the joy of Christmas and send a message of hope to America’s less fortunate children.
The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity which was created at the behest of the U. S. Marine Corps in 1991. The group accepts cash and donations of new toys throughout the year.
