Early Tuesday morning just before 9 a.m., the Lane County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a logging fatality approximately 4 miles east of Mapleton, along Highway 126.
Lane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded in conjunction with Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue to the location near milepost 19.
In addition, members of Eugene Mountain Rescue and Lane County Ground Search and Rescue, which are specialized units of Lane County Search and Rescue, responded with several volunteers to assist with recovering the body of 35-year-old Arturo Toral-Pacheco of Springfield.
Recovery efforts took volunteers approximately 200 yards down a steep embankment.
“It is very early in the investigation and we are still working to determine the events leading up to the incident,” said Sgt. Carrie Carver of the Lane Country Sheriff’s Office, who added that the initial investigation indicates that Toral-Pacheco likely fell from an elevated position.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office was continuing to conduct the death investigation with the Lane County Medical Examiner’s Office after press deadlines Tuesday evening.
“Our thoughts go out to Toral-Pacheco’s family and friends after this tragic incident,” said Carver.
