SMS wrestlers pin outstanding season

The district tournament officially wrapped up the regular season for the program, but some of the kids will continue on to regionals.

March 13, 2019 — With several new members joining the Siuslaw Middle School wrestling roster this year, as well as the return of seasoned veterans like eighth-graders Mason Buss (110 lbs.) and Yoskar Delamora (90 lbs.) who picked up their third-consecutive district titles this year, “We had a pretty exciting season,” said coach Stecher Buss. “We had a great turnout. The experience and work ethic of our eighth-grade team is going to be fun to watch over the next few years in high school.”

Eighth-graders Cayden Gray (95 lbs.), Ian Sissel (140 lbs.) and Jonathan Rose (175 lbs.) each claimed their first district titles, with Wyatt Tatum (132 lbs.) and Logan Wells (150 lbs.) claiming second-place medals.

In the 6th- and 7th-grade division for SMS, Joel Sissel (110 lbs.), Elliot LaCosse (117 lbs.), Dayne Muller (132 lbs.), Cort Wagginer (140 lbs.) each landed first-place medals at district, along with second place for Cameron Groves (85 lbs.) and third place for Leo Robertson (95 lbs.)

In their first year on the team, wrestlers Terry Elliot (110 lbs.), Dalton Mcgowan (102 lbs.) and Auston Potter (132 lbs.) placed third, fourth and fourth, respectively.

The district tournament officially wrapped up the regular season for the program, “but some of the kids will continue on to regionals,” said Buss. “If they place within the top three at regionals, they will qualify for the Middle School State Wrestling Tournament, where the top 16 wrestlers in Oregon will compete for championship titles.”
