SMS wrestlers advance to regionals, state mats

Seven Siuslaw Middle School wrestlers made the trip to Crater High School on March 3 to compete in the Middle School Regional Wrestling Tournament. The tournament was one of four being held throughout the state of Oregon, with a placement among the top three earning wrestlers an invitation to the State Middle School tournament the following weekend.

Wrestlers representing SMS included Cameron Groves (85 lbs.), Yoskar Delamora (90 lbs.), Cayden Gray (95 lbs.), Joel Sissel (110 lbs.), Mason Buss (110 lbs.), Ian Sissel (132 lbs.) and John Rose (175 lbs.)

“All the boys wrestled well with Yoskar, Mason, Ian and John all making it to the semifinals,” said coach Stecher Buss. In addition, Gray and Joel Sissel wrestled their way into the consolation side of their brackets after one loss each.

“Some brackets had up to 32 wrestlers or more. It is a grind,” Buss added.

Wrestlers in the largest brackets were required to win as many eight matches in order to get back into the top three of consolation after just a single loss.

“I was feeling good, and we were in a good spot to take a handful of wrestlers to state,” said Buss. “Then in the next round the momentum shifted, and we lost all our semifinals matches.”

Buss said the consolation rounds were rough on the young Viking team. At the end of the day, 110-pounder Mason Buss was the only wrestler who qualified for the state tournament after placing 3rd in his weight class.

The following week on March 9, Buss was on the mats in Woodburn, Ore., for the state tournament, where he wrestled well among the best middle school mat men in Oregon. Among the top 16, Buss battled his way into a fourth-place finish, defeating wrestlers he had lost to earlier in the season.

Buss went on to compete at the Cadet Freestyle State Championships, where he wrestled back from behind in several matches to defeat a high school state qualifier and a state placer en route to a spot in the finals, earning a silver medal. His placement qualifies Buss to be part of the 2019 Oregon Cadet National Wrestling Team and a chance to compete at the National Freestyle/Greco tournament in Fargo, ND this summer, July 11-19.
