May 19, 2019 — While seven Siuslaw High School Viking track and field athletes are competing for state 4A titles this weekend, six Siuslaw Middle School athletes are preparing to compete in their own version of state competition next week.
Eighth-graders Jacob Blankenship, Jonathan Rose, Sam Ulrich and Jaden Welker will each compete in individual events, with Noel Hernandez and Preston Theiman joining Ulrich and Welker in the 4x100-meter relay during the Meet of Champions this Thursday (May 23) at Corvallis High School.
Rose threw the discus for a personal record of 125 feet, 8 inches, winning the eighth-grade division at the recent Far West League Middle School District Championships in Coos Bay.
Ulrich won the 800 meters in 2:21.68 for the district title, followed by Blankenship in third place with a PR time of 2:27.08.
Welker ran a PR in the 400 meters, finishing in 59.67 for second place, and also placed third in the 200 meters (26.87).
Welker, Theiman, Ulrich and Hernandez each ran a leg in the 4x100 to win the event in 49.25.
Unlike the 4A state meet at the high school level, there are no classifications at the Middle School Meet of Champions, meaning that athletes compete against other athletes from schools of all sizes from throughout the state — with invitations to the meet based on season-best marks rather than district championship performances.
The team is coached by Rachel Campbell and Siuslaw High School alumni Sean Campbell.
