Siuslaw wrestlers wrap up season

Siuslaw sophomore Ryan Jennings went 2-2 at the OSAA 4A state wrestling tournament.

Feb. 27, 2019 — Four Viking wrestlers made the trip to Portland over the weekend for the Oregon School Activities Association 4A wrestling tournament, and by Saturday only one — sophomore Ryan Jennings — remained on the mats.

On Friday, sophomore Elijah LaCosse (126 lbs.), junior Matthew Horrillo (220 lbs.) and senior Riley Jennings (170 lbs.) each were eliminated from competition. LaCosse lost his first two matches by fall, ending his chances to advance. In addition, Horrillo and both Jennings brothers lost their opening matches, with Ryan losing by fall to Estacada’s Sam Garrison, Riley losing by fall to Grayson Livingston of LaGrande and Horrillo losing by 6-4 decision to Kody Zemke of Madras.

But all three went on to win their next bouts. At 170 pounds, Riley pinned Caleb Taylor of Molalla in 4 minutes, 20 seconds. Horrillo won in a tiebreaker round, 3-2, over Matthew Clark of Cascade, and Ryan defeated La Grande’s Keith Oswald, 3-2.

The wins advanced all three into the next round where Riley and Horrillo each lost by decision at 10-1 and 2-1, respectively.

But Ryan picked up another win, taking down Hunter Lehman of Gladstone in a 5-3 decision, Ryan into the next round of consolation.

There, he faced Madras senior Victor Torres, who quickly won by fall late in the first round (1:32).

Ryan went 2-2 at the tournament in his first trip to the state mats.
