Feb. 10, 2018 — The Viking wrestling team will continue in the second day of competition today after kicking off day one of the state qualifying meet at Hidden Valley High School.
Siuslaw came into the two-day meet with 12 wrestlers competing in 10 weight divisions, including returning 113-lb. 4A state champion Richard Huff, who is seeded No. 1 at 120 lbs. this year.
Junior 170-pounder Riley Jennings has the team’s second-highest seeding at No. 2, followed by freshman Brady Libby slotted at No. 4 in the 106-lb. bracket, and sophomore Matthew Horrillo seeded No. 6 in the 285-lbs. division.
A total of 12 teams from the 4A division are on the mats for the Special District 3 meet, which includes Far West League rivals Marshfield, North Bend, South Umpqua, Douglas/Cammas Valley and Brookings-Harbor, along with Skyline teams Henley, Hidden Valley, Klamath Union, Phoenix and Mazama.
With three returning state champions and two state placers, Marshfield is favored to take home the team title, with Mazama, Henley, Douglas and Phoenix all vying for a shot after successful seasons.
Winners from this weekend’s district meet will move on to the state championships next Friday, Feb. 16, and Saturday, feb. 17, at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
