Feb. 8, 2020 — The Viking boys’ basketball team had little trouble caging the Lions last Tuesday at Glenn Butler Court, where Siuslaw held a double-digit lead throughout the second half against Cottage Grove before claiming a 50-36 victory.

The win put Siuslaw at 3-3 in the Sky-Em (9-11 overall) heading into last night’s match-up at Marist (after press deadlines) and holding on to a share of third place — and a potential playoff spot. However, last night’s game against the No. 1-ranked Spartans was the first of three road matchups for the Viks as the second half of the season is well underway, leaving the Feb. 18 game with Junction City marking the last game of the regular season — and final scheduled home game for Siuslaw.

To make the post season, the Viks will likely need to secure wins in three of its four remaining games, which also include facing off with Marshfield and Elmira.

Last Tuesday night, Siuslaw took an early 9-2 lead against the Lions in the first quarter and extended its lead to 15-8 heading into the second period. By halftime, the Vikings were ahead by 11 and led by as many as 18 points on two occasions in the fourth period before locking the win.

The Viks got 10 points each from Liam McClellan and Braydon Thornton, along with 8 points each from Avery Hart and Brody Terry, and Jacob Foskett with 6 points.

That same night, Marist easily handled Elmira 70-38, and Junction City beat Marshfield 66-55.

In the Siuslaw girls’ game, undefeated Cottage Grove (6-0, 15-5) took a decisive 22-8 lead by the end of the first quarter extended its lead to 31-19 by halftime. From there, the Lady Viks were held to just 6 points in the second half before falling to the Lady Lions, 46-25.

Junior point guard Brea Blankenship led drained a trio of 3-pointers in the first half to lead Siuslaw in scoring with 9 points. Senior post Mia Collins claimed 6 points, along with 4 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. Junior forward Gracie Freudenthal had 6 points.

The Lady Vikings (0-6, 1-19) will be on the road for their next three games, beginning last night at Marist (after press deadlines), followed by Marshfield on Tuesday and Elmira next Friday, Feb. 14.

All three games tip off at 5:45 p.m., followed by the boys’ game at 7:15 p.m.
