March 27, 2019 — The Vikings baseball team was on the road last Saturday (1-5) in a doubleheader against the Pelicans (3-3) at Klamath Union High School.

In the opener, Siuslaw started left-handed pitcher Gabe Simington, a Mapleton senior, who went on to strike out 14 in just over 5 innings of work on the mound — throwing 69 strikes on 109 pitches.

Simington also led the Viking offense, smacking a double and driving in 3 runs from the clean-up spot in the rotation.

The Vikings kept things close throughout the opener, tying the game at 2-2 in the top of the 9-second inning, then rallying after a two-run third inning for the Pelicans to remain within one run, 3-4, in the top of the fourth.

Siuslaw took a 5-7 lead in the top of the fifth on hits from sophomores Clay Kramer Elijah Blankenship, along with junior Caleb Hennessee.

Klamath Union answered in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs on 1 hit, a pair of walks and a series of 4 errors by the Viks that allowed the Pelicans to scoop up a narrow 8-7 win.

In the nightcap, Klamath Union won it easily in an 11-0 shutout.

Last night, Siuslaw hosted Nea-Kah-Nie (after press deadlines) and will wrap up the pre-league season next Tuesday, April 2, at home in a doubleheader against Douglas.

First pitch is at 3 p.m.
