Jan. 29, 2020 — The Siuslaw wrestling team had a stellar week at the Sky-Em and Bay City dual meets on Friday and Saturday, with the Viks winning eight of the nine matches they competed in.
“Our team wrestled very well all through the weekend, especially our experienced wrestlers,” coach Neil Wartnik said. “The biggest individual performance was turned in by Matthew Horrillo, who was undefeated on the weekend and defeated the No. 2-ranked (4A) 285-pounder from Hidden Valley [Christopher Woods].”
Yoskar Delamora also went undefeated over the weekend, while Christian Newlan, Elijah LaCosse and Mason Buss all going 8-1.
“Ryan Jennings and Hunter Petterson wrestled well too, going 5-1 and 4-1 respectively,” said Wartnik.
On the girls’ side, Bailey Overton and Hayden Muller were crowned Sky-Em weight class champions, while Arrianna Brown placed second place.
Team-wise, Siuslaw won the Sky-Em Dual meet overall, beating out Cottage Grove 48-36 and Junction City 45-33.
At the Bay City Duals, the Viks took second, besting Marshfield 60 to 16 and Glide 50-18. They swept Cottage Grove in the semifinals (45-33) but lost the crown in the finals to Hidden Valley. Though both teams scored 27 points, the Mustangs claimed a larger overall point count to earn the tourney title.
“It was another exciting weekend,” Wartnik said. “This team continues to grow and rise to the challenge.”
