Despite Friday’s loss at home against Corbett (3-6), the Lady Vikings continue to improve in the pre-season, with the final score not reflective of what was a hard-fought win for the visiting Cardinals line-up.

Tied at 26-26 entering halftime, Siuslaw fell behind 26-34 in th opening minutes of the third quarter, then held the Cardinals to just one basket during the last 4 minutes of the period.

Meanwhile, sophomore Mia Collins, along with freshmen Gracie Freudenthal and Brea Blankenship, contributed 7 points, pulling the Lady Viks to within 3 points entering the fourth quarter, 33-36.

In response to Siuslaw’s taut 2-3 zone defense, Corbett began to strike from outside the arc. Though senior guard Carreina Greenburg was able to penetrate the Cardinals’ defense, and Freudenthal, Collins and junior guard Madison Reynolds were able to dominate the boards at both ends of the court, Corbett continued to drain 3-pointers and stay ahead.

Down the stretch, foul trouble for the Lady Vikings played to Corbett’s advantage toward a 46-37 win.

Blankenship led scoring with a team-high 14 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Greenburg had 9 points and 6 rebounds. Collins had a team-high 9 rebounds to go with 8 points.

Junior Alyssa Richards had 7 rebounds, Freudenthal and Reynolds had 6 rebounds each, and senior Marika White had 5 rebounds.

Friday and Saturday, Siuslaw is scheduled to participate in the Crossover Tournament at North Valley High School.

On Tuesday, Jan. 9, Siuslaw will wrap up the non-league season at Junction City, beginning at 7:15 p.m.

The Lady Vikings will open the Far West League season at home against Marshfield on Friday, Jan. 12.

Tipoff for the league opener is at 6 p.m.
