Jan. 19, 2019 — Both Siuslaw teams were on the road at Marist Tuesday night for the second game of the Sky-Em League season.

In the girls’ match-up, the No-7 ranked Spartans were caught off guard by Siuslaw, which took and maintained the lead from start to finish, including an 8-point lead to start the fourth quarter, 31-23.

Marist (2-0, 10-5) rallied hard, scoring 17 points in the quarter. Despite that effort, Siuslaw still held a 3-point, 40-37 advantage with 6 seconds remaining in regulation.

Then, at the 3-second mark, the Spartans drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 40-40 and send things into overtime.

Marist managed to outscore Siuslaw 11-5 in OT, nudging out the Vikings for a 51-45 win.

Sophomore Lindsey Long led Siuslaw with 16 points — 11 in clutch shooting from the foul line. Sophomore Gracie Freudenthal scored 11 points and was a force defensively. Senior Alyssa Richards nabbed 10 points for Siuslaw.

In the boys’ game, the Vikings kept things close throughout most of the first half, holding Marist to just 17 points with just 5 minutes remaining before the break for a 17-17 tie.

But the Spartans put together a 16-4 run heading into halftime to take a 33-21 lead.

Siuslaw opened the third period with a long 3-pointer from senior Dylan Wynn to close the scoring gap to 9 points, but it was all Marist from there, with 14 Spartans eventually scoring in the game for a 68-40 win.

Senior Nick Swift and freshman Braydon Thornton led scoring for the Viks with 9 points apiece.

Last night, Siuslaw was on the road at Marshfield (after press deadlines) to take on the Pirates.

Tuesday, the Viks will travel to Elmira to face the Falcons.

The boys’ game tips off at 5:45 p.m., followed by the girls at 7:15 p.m.
