Siuslaw falls to South Umpqua

This Friday night, Siuslaw will return to its home hardwood for a nonleague endowment game against Douglas at Glenn Butler Court

S. Umpq. d Siuslaw: 48-32

Dec. 24, 2019 — The Siuslaw girls basketball team remains in the hunt for its first league victory, but moved a step closer to achieving its goal last Friday night on the road at undefeated South Umpqua (7-0). Though the Lancers held a strong 15-3 lead at the end of the opening period, the Lady Vikings kept at it, tacking on 10 points in the second quarter with shooting from seniors Mia Collins and Savannah Morris, and junior Brea Blankenship.

The No. 13-ranked 3A Lancers took advantage of a combination of strong play by senior Kyla Pires, who sank 23 points for South Umpqua, and some poor shooting from the Viks, who went 50 percent from the foul line.

The Lancers increased their lead to 35-20 at the end of the third period before securing a 48-32 nonleague victory.

Collins led with a team-high 11 points, along with 6 rebound, 6 blocked shots and 1 steal. Blankenship had 9 points and Morris had 6 points for the Viks. Defensively, junior post Gracie Freudenthal, who left the court in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury, had 10 rebounds on the night.

This Friday night, Siuslaw will return to its home hardwood for a nonleague endowment game against Douglas at Glenn Butler Court. Admission will be $6 for adults or $4 for students. No passes will be accepted for the game, including SHS season and family packages or ASB Cards.

Tipoff is set for 5:45 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:15 p.m.
