Siuslaw cheerleaders heading to state

Jan. 6, 2019 — Come Saturday, Siuslaw’s cheerleading team will be one of 10 squads on the mats at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland for the Class 4A Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) state cheerleeding championships.

The Vikings’ last appearance at state was in 2017, when they finished 11th out of 13 teams.

This year, Siuslaw is one of only two teams from the Sky-Em League to qualify for state competition, along with Cottage Grove’s squad.

Other 4A teams competing this year include Cascade, Estacada, Gladstone, Newport, Ontario, Sisters, Stayton and Sweet Home.

Last year, Siuslaw didn’t qualify, with Cottage Grove being the only Sky-Em representative. Henley went on to take the state crown but did not qualify for this year’s competition.

Siuslaw is set to perform beginning at 9:20 a.m.

Coached by 2018 Siuslaw Hall of Fame inductee Diane Conlee, the team’s roster includes freshmen Arianna Brown, Brooke Olson and Kelly Phillips, sophomores Leana Jagoe and Adria Sandusky, and seniors Danielle Goldblatt, Grace Hammonds and Desteny Johnson.
