Richard Huff (above) had two top-three finishes in two tournaments last weekend.

On Friday, Siuslaw was on the mats at the 21-team Deven Dawson Memorial Tournament, where the Vikings (130 points) placed third in team scoring behind first-place Pleasant Hill (135 points) and Harrisburg (131 points).

The Vikings got an outstanding performance from sophomore 120-pounder Gavin Fletcher, who pinned his way to the tournament title with four consecutive victories.

Senior Richard Huff, returning 4A state champion at 113 pounds last season, advanced to the finals before falling to Harrisburg junior Chance Hendrickson, returning 113-lb. 3A state champion, by pin in 1 minute, 59 seconds.

Viking junior Riley Jennings, wrestling at 170 lbs., placed second, with senior 132-pounder Patrick Hill taking third overall.

The Viks also got scoring from Sal Sierra (145 lbs.), who went 3-2 including a 10-1 win over Sheldon’s Sidney Bork; Alexander Paasch (152 lbs.) was 2-2, pinning Santiam’s Talon Henness in 10 seconds and scoring a 22-12 major decision; Ryan Jennings (145 lbs.) was 2-2, with pins over Jordan Thorton of Sheldon in :32 and Brady Frost of Churchill in :34; Elijah LaCrosse pinned Jake Brooks of Churchill (2:31) and Grey Canada of Elmira (1:50); Matthew Horrillo went 3-1, pinning his last three opponents in less than 25 seconds.

The next day, Siuslaw was back on the mats for the Perry Burlison Invitational at Cascade, where Huff lost his opening match but went on to win the next four matches — two by pin — at 126 lbs. for third place.

Jennings went 1-2 with a pin over Johnny Sylva of Stanton (3:59); and Horrillo went 1-2, pinning Anthony Alvarez in 4:32 for his only win on the day.

This weekend, Siuslaw will compete at the two-day Coast Classic, Dec. 8 and 9, at North Bend High school.
