Feb. 6, 2019 — The Siuslaw Vikings boys wrestling team took the mats on Saturday morning at the Oregon West Conference Duals at Philomath High School. With matchups against Sweet Home, Philomath, Stayton, Cascade and Newport, the Vikings got off to a slow start in round one against Sweet Home. Despite the collective struggles, Viking junior Matthew Horrillo managed to win his matchup at 220 pounds against junior Jake Fanning. However, Siuslaw eventually fell in team scoring to the Huskies, 78-3.
The Vikings continued the tournament with strong efforts in the next three rounds with performances from sophomore Brady Libby with three pins (120 lbs.), sophomore Hector Garcia, who had one pin along with two wins by major decision at 160 pounds.
In addition, senior Riley Jennings (170 lbs.) finished with three pins, but Siuslaw ultimately fell to 0-4 going into the final round.
With the regional championships ahead, Siuslaw was looking to gain some momentum to finish the fifth round — and the Vikings did just that. Siuslaw claimed four matches by forfeit to eventually outperform Newport in scoring. Siuslaw junior Matthew Horrillo led all Vikings, winning all five of his matches, including three by pin and two by decision.
The Viking finished 1-4 overall with a win over Newport (48-18) and losses to Sweet Home (78-3), Philomath (36-28), Stayton (36-33) and Cascade (54-25).
Friday, Siuslaw will compete at Junction City High School for the 4A Special District 2 meet.
Top finishers will move on to state Feb 22-23 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
