SHS falls short on Newport hardwood

Siuslaw: 13  09  07  07 — 36

Newport: 12  18  21  14 — 65

Dec. 8, 2018 — Siuslaw had no answer for senior Justin Plechaty, who accounted for nearly half of the Cubs’ 65 points last Tuesday night in Newport in a non-league match-up with the Viking boys basketball team.

Siuslaw managed to keep the Cubs in check for the first quarter, holding a slim 13-12 lead over Newport. But that all changed in the second period as the Cubs went on a 16-4 rally that included 11 points from Plechaty.

Trailing 30-22 to start the third period, the Viks zeroed in on Newport's top scorer, holding him scoreless for the period. Despite that, Newport was able to continue extending its lead while holding the Viks to just 7 points on a 21-7 run.

Siuslaw sophomore Jacob Foskett was the Vikings' top scorer, claiming 9 points, and fellow sophomore Liam McClellan sinking a pair of 3-pointers and finishing with 8 points against Newport. Freshman Braydon Thornton chipped in seven points for Siuslaw in a 65-36 loss to the No. 9-ranked Cubs.

Thursday, Siuslaw began the three-day Les Schwab Junction City/Harrisburg Tournament. Siuslaw will play through Saturday, with opponents and game times to be determined. Tuesday, Siuslaw will travel to play previous Far West League opponent Sutherlin in a non-league matchup against the Bulldogs.

Tip-off is at 7:15 p.m.
