Jan. 11, 2019 — Shirley (Miller) Brog, 94, passed away peacefully at home Dec. 30, 2019.
Shirley was born Aug. 29, 1925, in Richland, Wash., to John and Velma Miller.
She was the eighth of 11 children.
They moved to Tenmile, Ore., when she was very young, and she attended the small Tenmile School.
Shirley attended Waldport High School while living with family and friends. After graduation, she was a waitress at Beulah’s Restaurant in Yachats.
Shirley met Walter C. Brog and they were married April 2, 1946. They had four children. Shirley and Walt owned several grocery stores in Brickerville, Drain and Dallas, Ore.
Later, Shirley was co-owner of Bay St. Family Tyes in Florence with her daughter, Suzi, until her retirement at age 80.
Shirley loved working with the public and met many people who adored her.
Shirley was always a homemaker who loved to cook, bake, garden and can. Extended family and friends would stop by to visit and Shirley would insist on feeding them; her pies were incredible!
Shirley’s greatest joy was her family: her children, 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was a “regular” at the casino, where everyone knew her. She was adamant about “scratching her tickets” and picking up her “freebies.”
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Walt; her parents; her six brothers: Clyde, Bill, Dewey, Ralph, Willis and Jimmy; three sisters: Lillian (Toots), Virginia (Vo) and Bonnie (Bundt); her daughter, Mary (Brog) Schmitt; her grandson, Jimmy Schmitt; and a great-granddaughter.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Suzi) and her husband Daryle Bennet; her son, Dale Brog and his wife, Vicky; her son David Brog; and her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Shirley’s life will be held today, Jan. 11, beginning at 1 p.m., at Burns’ Riverside Chapel in Florence.
