American Legion Post #59 held a flag retirement ceremony across from the Veteran’s Memorial Park on Bay Street

June 19, 2019 — On Flag Day, June 14, American Legion Post #59 held a flag retirement ceremony across from the Veteran’s Memorial Park on Bay Street in Historic Old Town Florence.

The colors were presented to begin the event by the Honor Guard from Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River. In addition, representatives from Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue, Girl Scouts, Daughters of the American Revolution Ocean Dunes Chapter, American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, City of Florence Public Works and Grimshaw Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3232 assisted in the event, along with other veterans.

Mike Nielsen was the Master of Ceremonies for the solemn occasion and brief speeches were made by Oregon Coast Military Museum Executive Director Cal Applebee and Florence Mayor Joe Henry.

Veterans Steve Sylvester, Wally Schoults and Don Jordon also shared their thoughts on the important role the American Flag has played in the lives of many Americans, some of whom made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

Around town, Florence Kiwanis Club had set up flags along the roadways and streets, which reminded people of this often-overlooked holiday.
