Siuslaw’s cross country team had solid individual performances at its first competition of the season, competing against more than 100 runners in both the boys and girls divisions of the Saxon Invite in Salem on Saturday.
For the girls, junior Hannah Rannow clocked a time of 19:33.26 to place 11th in a field of 124 runners, which included teams Sheldon, Bend and fellow Sky-Em League opponent Marist.
Sophomore Brea Blankenship was the second to cross the finish line for the Lady Viks, placing 24th with a time of 20:22.91. She was followed by juniors Anne Wartnik in 32nd place (20:49.49) and Chloe Madden in 37th (20:56.46) and sophomore Gracie Freudenthal in 22:36.38 for 82nd place.
Freshman Rylee Colton and senior Naomi Shoji finished with non-scoring times of 23:42.04 and 25:21.37, respectively.
Siuslaw placed fifth out of 15 teams, with North Salem (74) taking the team title and Marist placing a close second (79). South Salem was third (93), Sheldon was fourth (144), followed by Siuslaw (156).
In the boys’ race, junior Kiger Johnson ran against 130 runners and placed 40th overall in 17:24.65 to lead the Vikings. He was followed by fellow juniors Brendon Jensen in 45th (17:36.67) and Jonah Jarman in 72nd (18:06.08).
The Viks' other top-five finishers included sophomore Jaxson Jensen in 88th (18:36.26) and freshman Chad Hughes in 90th (18:38.70).
Junior Jared Northrop also ran for Siuslaw (19:03.79), along with senior Robert Mans (20:20.13).
Siuslaw was 14th out of 18 teams with a score of 305. Sheldon placed first overall with 51 points, followed by Marist in second (97) and Bend (126).
Siuslaw will compete at the Northwest Classic this Saturday at Lance Community College in Eugene, on the same course that will be used in the state meet later this fall.
