July 24, 2019 — “This was the most fun I’ve ever had in one weekend in Florence,” one community member said Saturday after attending the 9th annual Power of Florence party in the parking lot of Grocery Outlet. The person had also attended the 2nd annual Florence Community Block Party in Historic Old Town Florence, along with hundreds of other area residents and out of town guests.
The City of Florence hosted the block party, which featured 5 Guys Named Moe, free ice cream from BJ’s, a photo booth and activities sponsored by area service groups. People got the chance to dance in the street as the band, based in Portland, Ore., played a variety of oldies and modern hits. Heralded as the start of Power of Florence, it kicked off two sunny days of activities all around town.
Power of Florence organizer Ava Glowacki said Saturday was a huge success, with dozens of volunteers working on community service projects around the city in the morning. The Bark in the Park renovation of Singing Pines Dog Park was particularly exciting as workers joined Florence Public Works to improve irrigation, plant trees and grass seed, add a water station, shovel ground cover and set paving stones at the entrance.
During the party in the parking lot, the Tavish Sextet, vocal students and CROW provided entertainment while service groups raised funds and interacted with the community.
