May 8, 2019 — Penny Roberta Mead, 77, of Florence, passed away April 28, 2019.
Penny was born May 30, 1942, in Illinois to Robert and Marie Dvorak. They moved to Florence, living near Mercer Lake.
Penny received her bachelor’s degree from California State Poly-tech College San Luis Obispo, Calif. She enjoyed sailing (especially tipping the boat over), loved puzzles, picnics, potlucks and traveling with the RV club.
She was chosen as RV activity director, where she planned programs and skits and wore silly costumes. One day when she was out on Mercer Lake, Penny met the local school principal and he was so impressed that he told her there was a job waiting for her if she wanted it. She always said that this was her first and only teaching interview!
From that day on, Penny won the hearts of school staff and children by bringing in boxes of kittens or bunnies, cooking and reading of other cultures, and making learning fun.
She also taught line dancing, followed the Trail Blazers and played bunko with friends. Penny was full of laughter and loved and cooked great food.
Penny married Gary Saubert in November 1965; he passed away in November 2004 after 41 years of marriage.
On Aug. 28, 2008, Penny married Loren Mead. He describes Penny as “per-fect in every way” as do his children, Lonnie, Susie and Alan, along with our families. Penny’s final day was truly a perfect gift to the family.
She gave us her smiles, laughter, and occasional exchanges of “I love you’s” and a parting kiss. Penny left this world the evening of April 28, following surgery. She loved life and was loved by all.
