HOLMAN—Paul Holman died peacefully on March 18, 2022, with his family by his side.
Paul was born in New Orleans, LA, on Oct. 1, 1944, to Chester David (“Dave”) and Marge Holman. Along with his four sisters, Paul was raised in Portland, Ore., before moving to Florence, Ore., in 1958 when his parents purchased the Florence News Advertiser, followed by the Siuslaw Oar and The West, which they merged into The Siuslaw News.
Paul graduated from Siuslaw High School in 1962 and the University of Portland in 1966 before joining the U.S. Air Force, where he proudly served for 10 years as a C-130 Captain during the Vietnam War and later as a flight instructor. While stationed at Little Rock AFB, he met Beverly Underwood, whom he would marry on June 2, 1973.
Upon leaving the Air Force, Paul joined the family business at The Siuslaw News in 1976, and would later purchase the business from his parents in 1980 upon their retirement. Paul served as publisher of the newspaper until his “semi-retirement” in 2000, when the paper became Siuslaw News.
In retirement, Paul actively continued to serve the Florence and Western Lane County Community, as an elected Florence City Councilor and Lane Community College Board member. He was an active member of the Florence Rotary Club for over 35 years, including serving as club president. He also worked part time as a realtor, where he relished the opportunity to introduce newcomers to the community he loved so deeply.
Paul was preceded in death by Beverly, his loving wife of 43 years, and is survived by two children (Tracy and Matt), four grandchildren (Myla, Bryce, Liam and Tate), and three surviving sisters (Judy, Trisha and Cheryl) and their families.
Services will be held on Saturday, April 2, at St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Dunes Catholic Church at 11 a.m., with luncheon reception to follow.
