Local athletics put on hold as school districts close

March 14, 2020 — “All Siuslaw High School Athletic practices are cancelled until further notice,” Siuslaw Athletic Director Chris Johnson said in a statement on Friday, just hours after Oregon Governor Kate Brown closed all schools for the next two weeks due to the novel coronavirus COVID-19. The schools are tentatively scheduled to reopen on April 1.

Siuslaw’s practices for baseball and softball will be cancelled, along with track and. Both Siuslaw and Mapleton, which will also be shut down, has cancelled track and field events and practices.

The move to close down the schools comes just two days after Brown cancelled all school sporting events in Oregon, a decree that extended to April 9. At press time, that ban has not been lifted, and it is unclear if the lack of practices with the total school closures will further push events later in the season.

Directly after Brown’s first decree, banning sporting events, Siuslaw Superintendent Andrew Grzeksowiak said. “There is an away track meet scheduled for April 11 and we will wait and see if the host school is capable of running the event during that week.”

However, the situation changes rapidly, nothing is certain at this point.

What is known that when the Siuslaw baseball team does return to the field, they will have a freshly painted arena in viking colors, along with a new roof.
