Sept. 28, 2019 — The Florence Wiener Dog Races are back — and the racers are barking forward. Spectators should get ready for the seventh annual Dachshund race event, once again inside the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. That’s right, the popular Wiener Dog Races are taking over the flat floor of the event center for a day at the races.
The Siuslaw News, Florence Events Center and the Florence Wiener Dog Races are partnering together for Okto-Fur-Fest, combining the favorite components of Florence’s past Oktoberfest celebrations into one new event.
On Saturday, Oct. 12, from noon to 3 p.m., join the community for great food and family fun. There will be traditional music as games will be held throughout the day inside the Florence Events Center.
Bratwurst, beer and wine will be served by the Friends of the Florence Events Center. Look out for Florence Mayor Joe Henry, who will tap the keg to begin the fun when the doors open at noon.
Adult beverages will only be served to those 21 and over.
The Wiener Dog Races will be a highlight of Okto-Fur-Fest. The games feature multiple heats for each Dachshund age group.
It’s a chance to let well-behaved dogs show off, especially as several previous Wiener Dog Race winners are expected to compete.
“We are excited for our annual race,” said Florence Wiener Dog Race Chairwoman Jeanna Petersen, who founded the event. “We can’t wait to see all the dogs run.”
Dave Petersen constructed the race houses and fencing for the races. These popular items have been used elsewhere in Oregon as other groups plan their own Wiener Dog Races.
Entry to Okto-Fur-Fest is $3. Limited perimeter seating, for the best view of the races, are available for $10 at the FEC Box Office.
Tickets are available at the Florence Events Center or at the door the day of the event.
“Thank you to all who help put on this event each year,” Petersen said. “We appreciate all your help and look forward to a great event.”
There is still time to register your dog for the Florence Wiener Dog Races. Call Petersen at 541-902-3529 or bring your dog to the Florence Events Center at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Certain information will be required for each dog.
