April 13, 2023 — Siuslaw senior Gillian Norton traveled to Ashland on April 8 to attend tryouts for the Western Oregon University cheerleading and made the team. “We can’t be any more proud of her,” said Siuslaw cheer coach Teri Straley. “She is my first four year cheerleader in high school and the first cheerleader since I took over coaching that has moved onto cheer in college. So proud!! She is changing from blue and gold to red and black!!”

In addition to being a captain on the Viking cheerleading team Norton also lettered in basketball for Siuslaw. “Gillian is a strong back base,” said Western Oregon Cheerleading in a news release. “ She is planning on majoring in Exercise Science and will be a great asset to our team. We are so excited to have her.”

[Editor's note: The Siuslaw boys golf team would go on to win tournaments in Salem on April 11 and in Florence on April 12 after press deadlines. Watch for further coverage from the Siuslaw News] The Siuslaw boys golf team continued its resurgence in its second year of return after a multi-year hiatus. After picking up its first team win of the season on March 20 at Salem the team traveled to Diamond Woods Golf Course in Monroe on April 3. Led by sophomore Ryan Klampe who finished second individually with a score of 82 over 18 holes and freshman Will Johnson who was next for Siuslaw with a fifth place 91, the Viks won the event with a team score of 377. La Pine was next with 420, followed by East Linn with 423.

The Siuslaw girls golf team finished third at Diamond Woods on April 3. Newport (515) and Harrisburg (529) were the only teams in front of the Lady Viks in the standings. Sophomore Rhianna Lane was the low golfer for the Viks. She scored 123 which was good enough for fourth. Junior Jenna Young was next for Siuslaw with a seventh place score of 126.

The Siuslaw softball team picked up their first league win of the season, 18-4, at La Pine on April 8. In the game sophomores Sophia Montonya and Abby Riggs both went 3-3. Fellow sophomore Jolee Erickson pitched the whole game for Siuslaw, striking out 4. The day before the two teams played a doubleheader which the Hawks won both games, 16-14 and 15-3. The Viks (2-8) hosted Elmira/Mapleton on Tuesday after press deadlines. The two teams will meet again today, in Elmira, for a doubleheader.  Elmira/Mapleton features sophomore Morgan Milbrett as the lone member of the team from Mapleton High. She plays outfield for the Falcons.

The Siuslaw baseball team traveled through rough weather to make it to eastern Oregon for their doubleheader against La Pine on April 7. The long trip might be why they had trouble getting their bats going in game one, which they lost 26-1. Sophomore Max Reynolds was 2-3 in the game. Game two was a lot closer but Siuslaw lost on a walk-off single 6-5. Reynolds again had a good game at the plate, going 3-3. Senior Noah Dotson pitched a complete game, striking out three and giving up three earned runs. The Viks (6-4) hosted Elmira on April 11 after press deadlines and will travel east to the home of the Falcons today for a doubleheader.
